One of my New Year’s Resolutions should be better planning ahead. It is New Year’s Eve and I have now realized I will probably be spending it alone. One kid is already back at college looking for a new job. One kid is working his job in a restaurant open for tonight’s celebration. And my darling husband is working long hours of overtime this holiday – he’ll be home, but probably fast asleep. My one consolation is my cat wanted to be petted (at least a little).
In an effort to help others not go through this saga and to make better plans for my next year, here are a few ideas to enjoy an Empty Nester’s New Year’s Eve.
Babysit Nieces and Nephews
Remember how tough it was to find a babysitter for your little ones when YOU wanted to go out for New Year’s Eve? Offer to help your younger siblings or a local military family. Bring games and craft projects to keep the children busy and almost awake for the big dropping of the New Year’s ball. A quick trip to the Dollar Store or Party Store will yield fun party hats and noise makers (these are definitely optional!!!).
Serve at your Church or Homeless Shelter
Many churches have New Year’s Eve celebrations for their members. Volunteer to help where ever needed for the night. There are many behind the scenes jobs to do while everyone is enjoying the planned programming. The same is true with homeless shelters. Most regular volunteers may want off during the festivities. Be there to help those most in need.
Get Together with Neighbors
Here’s the thing: I don’t like to drive anywhere on New Year’s Eve. I want to be close by where I’m going to be sleeping so there is little risk of drunk driving issues (not mine of course). Your Empty Nester neighbors may be experiencing the exact same challenges you are. Why not solve it together? Meet together with a few neighbors. Each bring a dish and a drink. Bring along your favorite games and a deck of cards. Enjoy hearing about how the Christmas holiday went for all the families. Ring in the New Year and walk home.
I’m off to call my neighbors and see what they are up to do tonight. . .
What suggestions do you have NOT to have to be alone as you celebrate a new year as an Empty Nester?
